What Clients Need From Us Right Now
Every client we have can now generate five versions of anything in an afternoon. They have the same tools we have, the same tutorials and the same AI subscriptions. What they don't have is someone willing to look at what's possible, tell them what's actually right for them, and be honest when the answer isn't what they were hoping for. So when clients know what they can do, our value is in knowing what they should do.
Clients Are Craving Truth Tellers
Our clients are drowning in deliverables every day. What they need is guidance, direction, and wisdom.
Picture the meeting that's playing out in a lot of client offices right now: a marketing director opens a folder of ten AI-generated options, each one functional, none of them obviously wrong. There's no shortage of ideas anymore. It's a shortage of elephants in the room who can stand up, say which one is best, and why.
Communicating the why behind the decision with a calming confidence is what clients are craving. They don't need someone to present more options. They need someone to make the call.Providing direction only works if it comes from experience and conviction. If we tell a client what they want to hear about their own idea, we’re no better than AI. We have to stand up for what we see as the path forward.
We have the wisdom to see patterns clients can’t from 100s of projects and interactions across several industries. In many ways, we’re becoming the accountability layer, the ones auditing what's real and safeguarding what's true while AI-generated synthetic nonsense floods every outlet. Clients need our influence to extend past the internal team and into the CFO's office. And it’s not about having a seat at the table as much as it's about honest direction becoming a business risk, not just a creative one.
There are harder conversations to have about what a client should spend money on, what isn't working, and what a client is really paying for. Clients are starting to ask these questions more directly than they used to. They know that the agencies worth keeping around are the ones willing to answer them straight instead of trying to keep everyone happy.
Be the elephant in the room.
What separates the agencies a client keeps from the ones they cycle through is the intelligence behind the work. We’ve sat across the table from hundreds of businesses and watched what actually happens after the deliverable ships. That's wisdom, and it doesn't come from a subscription. It comes from doing this long enough to know which idea holds up and which one only looks good in the presentation. Clients are looking for that judgment now, whether they realize it or not. And those of us willing to lead confidently are the ones building something that will last for our clients and ourselves.
